Wat Vichitsangkharam (Wat Khuan): A Beautiful Temple on a Hill in Central Phuket
For those who have the opportunity to visit Phuket and are seeking a peaceful place to rejuvenate the spirit, we recommend visiting “Wat Vichitsangkharam,” commonly known among Phuket locals as “Wat Khuan.” This temple is situated on a hill in the heart of the city, offering a shaded and tranquil atmosphere perfect for paying respects to Buddha, making merit, or simply relaxing peacefully amidst nature.
Wat Khuan is located at No. 1 Narisorn Road, Talad Yai Sub-district, Mueang District, Phuket Province. The temple grounds span over 13 rai and represent one of the ancient temples, constructed in 1918 (B.E. 2461). The temple was named “Wat Vichitsangkharam” in honor of Phraya Vichitsongkhram (Tat Rattanadilok Na Phuket), who served as the provincial governor of Phuket during that era. The temple is situated on a “khuan” or hill, according to the local Southern dialect, hence earning the colloquial name “Wat Khuan” from its inception. The distinctive feature of this temple lies in the construction of buildings and structures along the hillside, creating a dimensional atmosphere with unique beauty. Additionally, it serves as a vantage point offering views of Phuket city from perspectives different from other temples. Beyond its religious significance, this temple also represents a historical landmark of Phuket city, as it is located near the Ta To Sae Shrine, the Land Office, and the city’s ancient community centers.
Whether you are spiritually inclined, historically interested, or photography enthusiasts, a visit to Wat Khuan to climb the hill, pay respects to Buddha, and enjoy the scenic views provides both recreational and spiritual fulfillment.
