Tracing the Christian Faith in the South: The Church of Our Lady of the Assumption, Phuket
For those seeking a place of spiritual tranquility in the tourist destination of Phuket, “The Church of Our Lady of the Assumption” provides the answer. This Catholic church not only possesses historical significance but has also served as the spiritual center for both Thai and foreign Christian communities residing in or passing through Phuket for over 70 years continuously.
The origins of this church began in 1953 through the efforts of Father Lino Inama and Father Primo Carnovale, missionaries from the Stigmatine Congregation who were assigned to conduct pastoral work in the area. Subsequently, a permanent church was constructed in 1958, which became the first brick-and-mortar church in the Southern region.
More remarkably, in 1961, this church was renamed “The Church of Our Lady of the Assumption,” adopting the name of an ancient Catholic church in Phuket that had existed before the war era and was discovered through historical documentation.
Despite Phuket’s status as a tourist destination, the Christian community here continues to maintain its spiritual roots steadfastly, whether through conducting Mass ceremonies, participating in community activities, or even warmly and openly welcoming tourists interested in experiencing Christian culture.
